ADA GOLDBERG 1879

Out of the eleven children of LEWIS/LOUIS and HANNAH GOLDBERG only 2 remained untraceable ADA & MARTHA. So we made it our mission to trace as much as we could about these 2 sisters, starting with ADA GOLDBERG. This is what we knew and how we managed to trace ADA to living relatives.

We knew from family stories that she had gone to live in America at the turn of the century. NEIL HORNICK had a newspaper clipping from The Daily Mirror and an entry in a guest book with an address in Los Angeles. He also had a family photo with Ada & Thomas with daughter and son-in-law Ethel & David granddaughter Shirley and husband Jack & great grandchildren Bill & Jane.

The Daily Mirror Article 1949

ADA GOLDBERG or possibly GILFUCH, was born, in Poland (Part of Russia) in 1879. She was the seventh child of eleven to LEWIS/LOUIS and HANNAH. The family came to ENGLAND after 1888, reportedly via HAMBURG.

In 1891, Ada was living with her Father, Mother & 9 siblings (Source 1891 UK Census). By 1901, all the siblings had left the family home and her Mother had died. The younger siblings were living with their older married siblings, but there is no trace on the 1901 Census of ADA GOLDBERG. ADA should have turned 16 in 1895, but there are no marriage records for ADA GOLDBERG that can be found.

The next confirmed Ada sighting is 1949 when she returned from Los Angeles to visit with her family. This visit was covered by The Daily Mirror May 18th 1949 page 7. Neil Hornick (Ada’s great nephew through Ada’s sister Rachel) had a copy of this that had been handed down to him. Neil was surprised to find that she is now ADA THOMAS as he was told that the family name was SOLOMON. Neil also has a hand written memory card that shows ADA’s address as 4210½ Effie St, Los Angeles, California from her 1949 visit to London.

We then turned to Ancestry.com and their US census records and Paul found them on all the censuses from 1910 – 1930.

The 1910 US Census, showing ADA THOMAS living with husband S THOMAS at West 66th Street, New York with children ROSA Aged 8 & ETHEL Aged 7. S THOMAS states he is Austrian & a house painter. ADA states she was born in England as were both of her parents which we know to be false. Rosa & Ethel are also listed as English, but both parents are listed as English too! All state they arrived in 1905.

The 1920 US Census, shows ADA THOMAS living at 4210½ Effie St, Los Angeles with her husband SIMEON and her two daughters RESE Aged 17 & ETHEL Aged 16. Again all state that they arrived in 1905 & Simeon states he was naturalized in 1909. Simeon also states he was Romanian & again Ada states she is English as are her parents. The children are also down as English with an English mother & Romanian Russian father.

The 1930 US Census shows IDA & SEMION THOMAS still living at 4210½ Effie St, Los Angeles with son-in-law DAVID GOTTSTEIN Aged 30, daughter ETHEL GOTTSTEIN Aged 26, granddaughter SHIRLEY A GOTTSTEIN Aged 1 11/12, daughter ROSE RACHMAN Aged 28 and grandson ARTHUR RACHMAN Aged 4 with no sign of a second son-in-law. Semion states he is a painter as is David & Ada has finally admitted that her parents were Polish.

1930 US Census

The next find was ETHEL GOTTSTEIN’s naturalisation record and this shows the following information:

       Naturalisation Date:                             12 Jun 1926
Place of residence:                               4210 Effie St, Los Angeles
       Occupation:                                           Musician
Date of Birth:                                         Oct 1903, London England
       Emigrated from:                                    Southampton, England
Arrived at the port of:                           New York 1904
       Vessel:                                                   Philadelphia
       Married:                                                  June 7
To:                                                           David Gottstein B. 6 Aug 1899 Omaha, Neb
Resident in the US since:                   1904
       Resident in California since:               1908

Once we had this we then found ETHEL’s birth certificate and this shows ADA GOLDBERG as Mother and EMMANUEL SOLOMONS as Father; this ties in with what Neil was told about ADA’a husband & finally gives us ADA’s married name. We have also found a record of a birth for ROSA SOLOMONS and a ROSE SOLOMONS in 1902 as well. The birthdates and place matches with what we know about ROSA.

We now went back to SIMEON and searched for an EMMANUEL. This uncovered naturalisation papers for EMMANUEL SOLOMONS (known as SIMEON THOMAS)! This confirms what everyone thought; that SIMEON had changed his name at some point so we have now tied the two families together. On EMMANUEL/SIMEON’s naturalisation papers he says that he came across from the UK on the Philadephia from Southampton on the 3rd of June 1906. We have also found his crossing on this boat, but he is alone. He states he was born in Barlod, Romania on the 1st January 1875 and was also naturalised in England.

Simeon Thomas Naturalisation Papers

There is a passenger manifest for an EMANUEL SOLOMON from the vessel Philadelphia sailing Southampton May 26th 1906 to New York June 4th 1906. Occupation described as house decorator, nationality Russian, race Hebrew. Staying at 210 Clinton street, New York with a friend JACK FEINBERG? (name unreadable). This ties in with what Simeon stated on his naturalisation papers.

There is no trace of ADA, ROSE or ETHEL or on any of the Philadelphia passenger lists. The only possibilities we have found so far are:

EIDE SALOMON arrival 4th august 1906 on the Philadelphia with children ROSI aged 4 and E STELLE aged 2. Going to join relative husband and father: ? SALOMON 332 Delencey Street New York. There are 2 sets of numbers written on the passenger list – 23-117059 and 6-22-42 the meaning of these is not yet known. This is 2 months after her husband went to the US.

1906 Ada Goldberg Passenger List

The original name we were given for ADA’s husband was THOMAS SOLOMON.

There is no record of THOMAS SOLOMON and ADA on the 1901 census, their marriage or children’s births.

There is an EMANUEL SOLOMON, spouse ADA born Russian subject about 1875. ADA’s age is shown as 22. Registration district St George in the East. Also son called HYMAN is listed age 1 month (1901 census taken March 31st 1901). ADA is shown as a Pol Russian subject. EMANUEL’s occupation is shown as a paper hanger.

1901 UK Census

Further research with HYMAN:

He doesn’t appear on passenger lists or census’ in US, but we have found an infant death of HYMAN SOLOMONS 2nd quarter 1901 St George in the East.

We are awaiting birth & death certificates for HYMAN. Search for ADA & EMMANUEL’s marriage certificates continues.

Conclusions:

ADA married EMMANUEL SOLOMONS/SOLOMON sometime between 1895 and 1900. They had a son HYMAN who died within his first 6 months. They then had 2 daughters, one in 1902 and one in 1903, registered with the family name of SOLOMONS. In May 1906 EMANUEL went to New York, but stated he was single. In August 1906 ADA (EIDE), ROSE (ROSI) and ETHEL (ESTELLE) also sailed to New York to join EMANUEL. By 1920 they had relocated to Los Angeles and when EMANUEL applied for naturalisation he had changed their name to the THOMAS family with EMANUEL also changing his first name to SIMEON.

The next mission was to see how if we could trace ADA & SIMEON’s children ROSE and ETHEL.  Please see Ethel’s profile for the next chapter.

Ø  Please note that EMMANUEL spells his name differently on different documents and this report is written to reflect this. There is also confusion between SOLOMONS/SOLOMON & SOLOMANS.
