Biography:
Louis was born c.1835 possibly in Kalisz Poland (source Sylvia Goldberg)
His hebrew name was Leib.
He is also shown in the census as Lewis and on the marriage certificate of son Samuel his
name is given as Judah or Judiah
*update* After finding the gravestone for Louis in Edmonton Federation Cemetery we managed
to get a translation from Hebrew (exchanged with Adi Krikman for a photograph of their relations
graves in Edmonton)
Lewis Goldberg:
Here buried YEHUDA son of reb BINYAMIN
died Tuesday 24 Tamuz 5676. Was 82 years old.
So this possibly ties in Judiah/Judah from the marriage certificate of Samuel
1n 1960 Louis's daughters Katie Phillips & Rachel Hornick were taped by Neil Hornick.
These are some of their memories.
Louis was according to his daughters a nice looking man with a very ginger beard,
he was also a roue. Louis was forcibly recruited to the Russian army at the age of 12
(1844 or 1845) as a drummer boy. Children were taken from their families with the aim
of converting them to christianity and making model soldiers of them. They were called
Cantonist children. While he was in the army he lodged with Hannahs family. Lewis
suffered a rupture while in the army as beatings and ill treatment were common.
Rachel remembers her father was so nice looking that in the army they put him at the
front, he would not take on the Christian religion so they used to hit him...with a whip,
they used to torture him. She also remarked that a lot of Jewish men did give in.
Katie said that Louis dug himself a grave on the street because they wanted him to change
his religion, he hid in a big grave in the street. She also told how Louis played music
in theatres, big theatres in Russia and he used to go to weddings in different parts of
the country, Louis played the clarinet and was hardly at home.
Louis also had two grocery shops, they lived in a big town not a village.
Louis was always ready to administer a beating if the children misbehaved.
