Biography:
Mark was “the apple of the family’s eye”. He moved from the East End to Clapton.
He became rich, wore a silk hat, owned a pony and trap driven by “a black boy”,
and had “God-like status in the family”.’
According to Ben Hornick, he was a real patriarch, who had a powerful voice and
always dressed smartly in smoking jacket and tasselled cap.

Mark came to England in 1885 to avoid army service. He changed his name from
Gulfuchs/Gilfuchs to Goldberg.

1891 census Mark Age 23 is a tailor and employer from Russian Poland he is living
at 24 Mount St Whitechapel with Amelia age 22 Russian Poland, Rose age 2 London Whitechapel,
Harris age 1 London Whitechapel. Also Sarah Jacobs age 19 from Russian Poland is a general servant.

1901 census Mark age 33 is living at 9 Downs Rd Hackney with wife Amelia age 32 and
children Rose age 11,Harry age 10, Harriet age 8, Nellie (Nettie) age 6, Isadore age 4.
Mark is a vest maker and employer. Mark has 3 servants Mary Crabb age 48, Hannah Lyons
age 20 and stableman groom Samuel Berkowitz born in Singapore. Mark & Amelia both state
they are from "Nalulabye" Russia but the place name is hard to read. I can find no trace of
any town with a similar name in Russia but there is a town called Namyslaki just south of
Kalisz in what was Russian Poland.
*update* on closer inspection their is a transcription error on the 1901 census
Nalulabye actually should be read as Naturalised (as in naturalised citizens)
